SUMO Dynamic Rating System by Operato to be used at Litgrid AB, Lithuania
Litgrid AB, transmission system operator (TSO) of Lithuania, has signed a contract with Operato (member of ELES Group), a Dynamic Rating System provider, for the implementation of the Dynamic Line Rating solution on the Palanga - Vėjas overhead line. The system will go live by the end of the year and should help Litgrid understand the potential of the existing grid when it comes to increasing the transmission capacity.
LITGRID AB, TSO of Lithuania, is responsible for connection of new renewable energy sources to electricity transmission network. In western Lithuania, there is no more possibility to connect any new producers directly to 110 kV lines and substations without network development or reconstruction, after taking into account the installed capacity of existing renewable energy power plants. New producers also request connection to 6-35 kV distribution network. In case of low consumption in the distribution network, the excess of generation flows through the transformer substations from distribution to the 110 kV transmission network. In case too many generating units are connected to the distribution network and reverse generation from the distribution network is adding to generation in transmission network, congestion is possible in 110 kV lines. To increase the connection capacity of the renewable energy sources to the 110 kV transmission grid, Litgrid is looking to increase the ampacity of the 110 kV power lines. This will be done by implementing Dynamic Line Rating technology, which would allow Litgrid to increase ampacity of the line without its reconstruction.
Operato’s SUMO Dynamic Rating System will be used as the system for dynamic line rating calculations, taking into consideration local weather conditions for which it will get the weather data from meteorological models and local weather stations provided by Micca. Micca will also provide a line temperature sensor for the results verification. The pilot will last for 15 months, followed by the final analysis and conclusions will be produced.
Andrej Souvent, CEO of Operato said:
“We are very proud to have started this project with Litgrid. Litgrid is now a third European TSO choosing our SUMO Dynamic Rating System. It is an important project for us as it will tackle one of the burning challenges for all TSOs: how to integrate more renewable energy sources using the existing grid? Especially in cases of wind farms, the dynamic rating systems can have a significant impact and release additional capacities of the existing grid.”
