ELES, Slovenia — In production since 2017

ELES, Slovenia — In production since 2017

SUMO runs day-to-day at ELES, supporting real-time operation and operational planning. 38 transmission lines, 10 power transformers and 2 phase-shift transformers monitored every day. Headline outcomes:

  • Higher transmission capacity available 95% of the time, with median uplift of 15–20% over nominal
  • Reduction of remedial actions in N and N-1 overload situations using DLR
  • Capacity forecasts up to 56 hours ahead
  • Reverse-DLR module used for icing prevention
  • Integrated with SCADA / EMS
  • Dynamic Thermal Rating calculations are used in electricity market participation

HOPS, Croatia — National-scale rollout

HOPS, Croatia — National-scale rollout

Croatia's TSO has chosen SUMO to roll out dynamic line rating across the country — a nationwide deployment covering more than 2,500 km of transmission lines.

As part of the Greenswitch project, ELES and HOPS found each other with a unique answer to the challenge of the expansion of the electric grid’s capacity and flexibility. ELES has an extensive experience in grid-wide Dynamic Line Rating, now powered by Operato’s SUMO technology. HOPS realized that by rolling out SUMO DLR over 2500km of lines, not only would they complement the 1000km of ELES, but create a unique internationally connected DLR area. When combining this with the joint operation of compensation devices and transformer thermal rating, the combined flexibility increase becomes much greater than the sum of the parts.

Litgrid, Lithuania — gains of 50% over the static limit

Litgrid, Lithuania — gains of 50% over the static limit

As a preparation for a potential rollout of DLR across 38 overhead transmission lines over 1100 km, Litgrid awarded a contract to Operato to deploy a dynamic line rating system on a test line and observe the DLR results for a whole year, covering all wwaether and seasons. The pilot exceeeded expectations with capacities exceeding the static limit on average by more than 50%.

Other parts of the SUMO solution that were demonstrated were the fast and seemless integration with eth SCADA/EMS system and SUMO's ability to calculate line sag and safety clearence at points of interest, based on the accurate prediction of the line temperature at all the spans of the line.
